On the 31st last month at 5 AM, before the first light, there were quite a lot of people waiting for the first train at Shin-lim subway station. The platform was full with the youth who stayed up all night with friends and those who were heading to work early in the morning.

The warmth that were created by different people heated up the frigid air of the dawn.

There are some people who greet the dawn before the passengers the subway station employees.

Subway station employees' daily work starts at 4:30 AM in the morning. The first thing they do when they wake up is to put a uniform. Wearing a neat uniform is a very basic thing for the station employees to do since they have to deal with passengers all the time.

Shin-lim station is the fourth busiest subway station after Gang-nam, Jam-sil and Hongik-Univ station among line 1 to 4 . One hundred forty thousand people use the subway system everyday at Shin-lim station.

Station employees' roles have to be big since there are many passengers using the subway station from the dawn.

[새벽을 여는 사람들] "시민 안전 위해 더 열심히 일하죠"

지난달 31일 새벽 5시, 동이 채 트기도 전 서울 지하철 2호선 신림역에는 첫차를 타려는 사람들이 제법 많이 모여 들었다. 친구들과 함께 밤을 지새운 청춘들, 그리고 이른 아침부터 생활의 터전으로 향하는 이들이 플랫폼을 가득 채우고 있었다. 각양각색의 사람들이 만들어낸 온기는 새벽의 추운 공기를 한결 따뜻하게 데운다. 이들보다 먼저 일어나 새벽을 맞이하는 이들이 있다. 바로 지하철 역무원이다.

지하철 역무원의 일과는 새벽 4시 30분부터 시작된다. 새벽에 눈을 뜨자마자 가장 먼저 하는 일은 바로 복장을 갖추는 것이다. 늘 시민을 대해야 하는 만큼 단정한 복장은 역무원의 지켜야 할 기본 중의 기본이다.

신림역은 서울메트로가 관리하는 지하철 1~4호선 중에서 강남역·잠실역·홍대입구역에 이어 4번째로 승하차 인원이 많은 역이다. 하루에만 14만 명이 넘는 시민이 이곳에서 지하철을 이용한다. 새벽부터 많은 사람이 몰리는 만큼 역무원의 역할도 클 수밖에 없다. 신림역에서 부역장을 맡고 있는 남기관(55)씨는 "역무원에게 가장 중요한 것은 고객 관리, 그리고 안전"이라고 강조했다. 안전 없는 고객 서비스는 의미가 없다는 뜻이다./스피킹전문 EDB 영어회화학원 대표강사 닥터 벤
